Chapter 13

Moss stepped out of the car, feeling uneasy. His mind was swimming. He had been happy to take control of the program a little. Even though Patchwork hadn’t provided any earth-shattering revelations, looking behind the curtain had helped. The equal and opposite part of learning that hackers were trying to pry open his mind worried him now every moment.

“You really didn’t have to come,” Moss told Ynna as she joined him on the street. She was the only one who had offered to come with him when Moss said he was going and while he was happy for the company, he was a little dubious as well.

“And miss an opportunity to teach some pervo a lesson? Not a chance,” she said.

She had worn an outfit designed to ‘mess with’ Zip Thud, but before they had left, Moss saw Gibbs grimace as Ynna emerged from their room. Knee-high white socks, a Leia-style skirt which amounted to a strip of cloth along her front and back, her trademark leather jacket with a strip of cloth the width of a belt as a top and her pink hair pulled into pigtails. She looked like every nerd’s wet dream.

A bright billboard overhead advertised cheap pets that barked and pawed from the display below. Tattoos were projected onto Moss and Ynna’s faces as they passed a parlor, hearing the buzz from within. People crammed inside a restaurant and outside at a crowded adjoining parklet, drinking sake, smoking and popping sushi rolls in their mouths.

The two pressed themselves into the mob as a Carcer drone whirred overhead. They were much more common downtown. Here, the skies were a constant sea of activity. Delivery and security drones whirred around one another ceaselessly.

They kept moving once the drone had buzzed off.

The streets at night were always more active than during the day. The wide-open frontage of an arcade flashed like a dance club and young people moved from game to game, watching and one-upping one another.

“Kinda wish we could just stop in and play a while,” Ynna said wistfully.

“Seriously, even ThutoCo used to let me take breaks once in a while.”

“Don’t let Sandra hear you talk like that,” Ynna said, shooting him a smirk. “Y’all best be keeping them noses to the grindstone,” she added in a mock impression of his grandmother.

Moss couldn’t help but guffaw, snorting as he sucked in air. “Don’t be doing nothern’ weren’t worth doing,” Moss tried his best do recreate his grandmother’s voice but it didn’t work at all.

Ynna shrieked with laughter, punching him on the shoulder. “That one didn’t even make sense.”

“I know, I know,” Moss said, still laughing. The two of them worked so tirelessly and so hard, they both needed a bit of fun.

As they passed a space between two buildings converted from an alleyway into a shallow ice cream shop, they shared a look. Neither spoke but both turned in unison.

“Two scoops of cookies ‘n cream with marshmallow, caramel sauce and hot fudge in a waffle cone,” Ynna said to the little robot in triangular paper hat.
